The Schmidt family

Tradition is not about preserving the ashes
but about passing on the flame.

Franz Josef Schmidt, together with his wife Astrid, daughter Anna, mother Margaretha and sister Brigitta Egarter, all take great pride in their property and strive to keep the family tradition going. As a certified sommelier Franz Schmidt pays special attention to serving the finest wines and spirits. We are also happy to welcome English and Italian speaking guests.

Our competent and friendly staff look forward to serving you at Gasthof Postwirt.

Tradition is priority

2012 was a special year in the history of the Postwirt

It marked the 100th anniversary of the inn, which was purchased in 1912 by the Schmidt family.

The Postwirt opened 100 years ago

The Postwirt is steeped in four generations of family history. In 1912, the inn was acquired by an ancestor of the Seeboden line of Schmidts, Hans Schmidt from Nuremberg, and his wife Maria (born in Seeboden). Today, Franz Josef and Astrid Schmidt are the fourth generation to successfully run the family business. "And we cannot forget to mention my mother Margaretha, who is still personally attending to guests. My sister Brigitta is also a great help," says Schmidt. A lot has changed since he took over the business in 1999.

Host with heart and soul

The entire building has been refurbished and modernized, including the adjoining Villa Ullrich, which houses 15 guest rooms. And the hard work has paid off. The Postwirt is among the only three establishments in Carinthia with a 3-star superior rating. "Stagnation is the first step towards falling behind! We’re striving to continuously develop further. I’m an innkeeper by heart and I believe you can only do a good job if you are passionate about what you do," says Schmidt.

Continuity

We are able to host events with up to 200 people in our restaurant. Senior hostess Margaretha is still a cherished member of the Postwirt team, known for her culinary skills and special themed weeks during which she spoils guests with tasty treats such as mushroom and asparagus dishes or a St. Martin’s goose. Meanwhile, the succession of Postwirt hosts seems to be secured for the fifth generation. "Our daughter Anna has successfully completed the tourism college in Villach and would like to gain valuable work experience both at home and abroad before, hopefully, taking over the Postwirt," says Astrid Schmidt.

History

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

Gasthof Postwirt, founded in 1912 by Hans Schmidt, born in Stein near Nuremberg and his wife Maria (née Hofer) from Seeboden, has been a family-owned business ever since.

Dedicated to quality and genuine hospitality, Franz Schmidt has been following the family path of going above and beyond to make each guest feel welcome.

In 1970, son Hans Schmidt acquired and expanded the adjoining Villa Ulrich property. After his father’s untimely death, he took over the third generation of the family business in 1973. Continuous improvements and modernization set new standards in terms of service quality and comfort. Following his father’s retirement, the current owner Franz Josef Schmidt assumed full responsibility for the business on January 1, 1999, ushering in its fourth generation.
